Quick answer
What is battery arbitrage, and does it work in Scotland?
Battery arbitrage means charging a home battery when electricity is cheapest, usually overnight, and using that stored power when prices peak in the early evening. In Scotland, smart tariffs such as Octopus Agile make the daily price gap clear. We compare tariffs, software and VPPs, and install through MCS-certified partners.

How battery arbitrage works
Buy low, use high. Every day.
Battery arbitrage means charging a home battery when electricity is cheap and selling it back when the price rises. In Scotland on Octopus Agile, the spread between off-peak and peak reached seventeen to thirty-seven pence per kilowatt-hour in the second quarter of 2026. The battery keeps that gap, minus small charging losses. A no-obligation survey gives figures for your home. This site compares the aggregators, software and hardware that make it work.
See the full processStep 1
Charge when power is cheap
Your battery fills up overnight, when smart tariffs like Octopus Agile often drop to around 5–7p per kWh (Octopus Agile typical overnight rates, Q2 2026).
Step 2
Run your home at peak
Between roughly 4pm and 8pm, your home runs on stored power instead of buying from the grid at peak rates, which on Agile often passed 30p in Q2 2026.
Step 3
Export the surplus
Spare energy can be sold back on an export tariff or through a virtual power plant, earning you money.
Arbitrage calculator
How does a home battery earn from arbitrage?
A battery earns from the gap between the price you charge at and the price you avoid at peak, after round-trip losses. The wider that gap and the more energy you shift, the stronger the case — a no-obligation survey turns this into figures for your home.
Adjust the sliders to see how battery size, tariff gap and cycling change the energy you shift and the gap you keep. This explains the principle; it is not a savings estimate.
14.1p / kWh
Peak rate after 88% round-trip efficiency, minus the off-peak rate.
Energy shifted to peak
2,990 kWh / year
Allows for losses and a 0.93 capacity factor over the battery's life.
A gap of 10p or more per kWh after losses is generally a workable starting point for arbitrage. Standing charges, your usage pattern and any solar change the picture, so a no-obligation survey gives figures for your home.

UK VPP aggregators
Which UK VPP aggregators can I join?
Six aggregators operate in the UK, each paying for your battery's flexibility in a different way — bill credit, cash or an export tariff. Which suits you depends on your hardware and tariff.
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) aggregates hundreds of home batteries and sells their combined flexibility to the grid. Joining a VPP can add a second income stream on top of arbitrage; a no-obligation survey gives figures for your home. This directory compares six UK aggregators by payment, hardware compatibility, and minimum system size.

Scotland recommendation
For Scotland-based installations on Octopus Agile (regions N and P), the Saving Sessions programme is usually the simplest starting point, because it works alongside Agile arbitrage without extra hardware. Grid connection notification (G99) must be filed with the relevant DNO: SP Energy Networks for the central belt and south, SSEN for the Highlands and islands. We handle G98/G99 paperwork as part of every installation. Contact Scottish Energy Efficiency for a tailored assessment.

Which home battery is best for arbitrage in 2026?
There is no single best battery — usable capacity, inverter compatibility, tariff access and warranty terms matter more than brand, so a no-obligation survey gives the right answer for your home.
There is no universally best battery for arbitrage: usable capacity, inverter compatibility, tariff access, export rules, and warranty terms matter more than the headline brand. This factual comparison helps you shortlist a system before a no-obligation survey.

When is battery arbitrage not worth it?
Arbitrage may not be worthwhile where tariff spreads are small, the system is regularly cycled outside its warranty assumptions, export limits prevent useful discharge, or the installation cost is too high for the expected annual return. A no-obligation survey and current tariff data are needed before making an investment decision.

When do you generate power versus when do you use it?
Solar panels generate most power midday, but households use most power morning and evening — a battery bridges that gap and lets you sell the surplus at peak rates.
This is the core problem a battery solves. Solar generates during the day; you use power morning and evening. Move the slider to add storage and watch the gap close — or not, if the numbers don't work for your setup.

Which Agile region is my Scottish home in?
Octopus Agile prices are set per region. South Scotland (region N) broadly matches the SP Energy Networks area: the central belt, Fife, the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. North Scotland (region P) broadly matches the SSEN area: the Highlands, Moray, Aberdeenshire, Tayside and the islands. A wider spread between off-peak and peak gives more arbitrage potential, so check the published rates for your own postcode.
If solar PV is part of the system, MCS MIS 3002 guidance treats Scottish generation as a range rather than a promise: Glasgow is approximately 700–810 kWh per kWp per year. A no-obligation survey gives exact figures for your roof, shading, and orientation.

C&I battery systems
Is commercial battery storage worth it in Scotland?
Commercial systems from 50kWh to 10MWh can stack revenue across six markets — capacity, Triad, FFR, DNO flexibility, arbitrage and behind-the-meter. A site assessment gives figures for your premises.
Commercial and industrial (C&I) battery systems from 50kWh to 10MWh. Revenue stacking across multiple markets can add value. All Scottish installations require G99 grid connection notification to the relevant DNO — SP Energy Networks for the central belt and south, SSEN for the Highlands and islands. We handle the G98/G99 paperwork as part of every installation.
Small Commercial
50–200 kWh
Mid-Scale C&I

What revenue streams can a commercial battery access?
Capacity Market
CM T-1 and T-4 auctions. Batteries >1 MWh qualify. Clearing prices are published after each auction.
Triad Avoidance
Discharge during Triad periods (Nov–Feb, peak demand). Reduces transmission-related network charges.
FFR / BM
Frequency response and Balancing Mechanism. NGET contracts. Requires <2s response time.
DNO Flexibility
Local constraint management contracts via Piclo Flex and National Grid ESO. In Scotland, SP Energy Networks (central belt and south) and SSEN (Highlands and islands) both run flexibility tenders. We handle G98/G99 grid connection paperwork for all installations.
Energy Arbitrage
Day-ahead and intraday market trading. Automated via BEMS. Highest revenue when stacked.
Behind-the-Meter
Demand charge management. Peak shaving reduces electricity bills directly.

Yes, once profits exceed the £1,000 trading allowance — below that, no tax return is needed and no tax is owed (HMRC, 2025/26 tax year).
Battery arbitrage income is taxable once profits exceed the £1,000 trading allowance (HMRC, 2025/26). Below that, no tax return is needed. Above it, income is treated as miscellaneous or trading income depending on scale and regularity.
How HMRC treats battery arbitrage income. Trading allowance thresholds, self-assessment obligations, and allowable expenses. Updated for 2025/26 tax year.
This is general guidance only. Consult a qualified accountant for your specific circumstances.
Trading allowance
If annual arbitrage income is under £1,000, no tax return needed and no tax owed. Applies from 6 April 2017.
Self-assessment threshold
Income over £1,000 requires self-assessment registration. Personal allowance of £12,570 means no income tax until profits exceed that threshold.
Higher rate taxpayer
If total income including arbitrage profits exceeds £50,270, the higher rate (40%) applies to the portion above this threshold.
Allowable expenses
- Electricity used for charging (metered, pro-rated)
- Battery system depreciation (capital allowances)
- Inverter and monitoring equipment costs
- Insurance attributable to the system
- Professional fees (accountant, surveyor)
- Subscription costs for automation software
- Proportion of broadband if used for monitoring
FAQs
Is battery arbitrage income taxable?
Yes, once profits exceed the £1,000 trading allowance. It is treated as miscellaneous income or trading income depending on the scale and regularity of activity.
Does the trading allowance apply to SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) payments?
SEG income is typically treated separately. HMRC considers SEG as income from property (the property generates it). The £1,000 property allowance may apply instead.
Can I claim the battery as a capital expense?
Yes. The battery qualifies for the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) if the activity is treated as a trade. 100% first-year relief up to the AIA limit (£1M for 2025/26).
What records do I need to keep?
HMRC requires 5+ years of records: charge/discharge logs, electricity bills, bank statements showing VPP payments, and receipts for all claimed expenses.
Peer-reviewed literature
What does the academic research say about battery arbitrage?
Peer-reviewed research shows that dynamic tariff dispatch can add value to a battery, and that what a UK home battery earns depends heavily on market conditions, tariff and cycling.

About
Who runs Battery Arbitrage UK?
Scottish Energy Efficiency is an independent advisory business based in Dundee, covering all of Scotland — we are not an installer and do not sell hardware.
batteryarbitrage.co.uk is the only UK site dedicated to making money from a home battery rather than saving money with one. We compare VPP aggregators, automation software, and market spreads so you can decide whether arbitrage is worth it before you invest.
Scottish Energy Efficiency is an impartial advisory business. We are not an installer, and we are not MCS certified in our own right. We install through MCS-certified partners: installation is carried out by our partner, Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd which holds MCS certification IAA10151, TrustMark registration 3559930, and Gas Safe registration 559575.
Based in Dundee, we cover all of Scotland. Our team has over 40 years of combined experience in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We work for you, the homeowner, not for the manufacturers.
Scottish housing stock matters for battery installation. Tenement flats and close entries common in Glasgow and Edinburgh may require co-owner consent for external battery enclosures. Sandstone and granite tenements in conservation areas or listed buildings need planning permission and a building warrant (via eBuildingStandards) before installation. A no-obligation survey confirms what is possible for your property.
What does MCS certification mean?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the UK quality mark for renewable installers. An MCS-certified installer has been independently assessed for technical competence. You can check the register yourself at mcscertified.com.
TrustMark is the government-backed quality mark for trades. An insurance-backed guarantee through the Independent Warranty Association covers your system if the installing company ceases trading. Both are held by Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd, not by Scottish Energy Efficiency.
How can you check an installer before you commit?
We install through MCS-certified partners. Our installation partner is TrustMark-registered and offers an insurance-backed guarantee, and you can verify every credential on the live public registers before you commit.
